March 27, 2020 update: And week two of school closure comes to an end... 1. Tyson Foods is donating 40,000 pounds of food to county schools to help during this time. This will be put toward our school lunch distribution. Many thanks to Tyson! 2. A reminder that Governor Reynolds has not given any indication that school will be closed for a longer period of time than what she has originally set. If you are hearing differently, it is only a rumor. 3. A clarification from yesterday. April 13 is the first day schools can reopen. April 13th is currently a vacation day (Easter Monday). Therefore, barring board action, the first day back for staff and students would be April 14th. 4. Continued thanks to those staff members who are working to distribute food, both through our food pantry and through our breakfast/lunch program. The need for this continues to grow. 5. On top of everything else, there is bad weather moving into the area this week. Stay alert and stay safe. 6. Finally, be watching for a post later this evening detailing plans for a virtual School Spirit Week starting on Monday, March 30th. As always... Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Wash your hands. Stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. Let me know if you have any questions. If I don't know the answer, I will find out and send out the information in a future update. #wearewapello #wapellotribepride

March 26, 2020 update: Governor Reynolds put some more restrictions in place for businesses today, but no change in the guidance given to schools. There are all sorts of rumors floating around right now. Currently, we are all planning on coming back to school on April 13. As always, we will follow the guidance given to us by Governor Reynolds and the Iowa Department of Public Health. And the best way to keep us coming back to school on the 13th is to follow the guidance we have all been given: Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Wash your hands. Stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. Parents want the kids back in schools. Educators want the kids back in the school. Even the kids want to be back in school, even if they might not admit it out loud! #wearewapello #wapellotribepride

March 25, 2020 update: Good afternoon, everyone! The school and the city are working in conjunction to close down our playground equipment. Signs will be posted. Caution tape may be used. We do not like the fact that we need to do this, but in order to follow the social distancing recommendations and guidelines, both the school and city felt this was something that needed to happen. We ask that you do not use city or school playground equipment until further notice. On a more positive note, I want to draw some attention to folks who I think deserve some special recognition. Those folks are the ones who are making sure our young people continue to get fed. To: Kathy Begey, Melissa Dodd, Amanda Harris, Michelle Hemphill, Lisa Patrick, Darren Wilson, and Susan Yakle, thank you for all of the work you are doing on behalf of our young people. You are amazing folks, and please know that all of your efforts are greatly appreciated! If I left anyone off of the list, I sincerely apologize. Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Wash your hands. Stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. #wearewapello #wapellotribepride

March 24, 2020 update: Remember that tomorrow is one of our food distribution days. Pickup starts at 10:00 at the elementary school, the Oakville community center, and Woodland trailer court. This is just like the summer lunch program. Any kid ages 0-18 can take part. Totally free. No paperwork. No qualifications. You don't even need to be a Wapello student. Show up and get food. Can't beat it. A reminder to students taking classes through SCC: Even though we are closed, the college is still in session. Therefore, college classes are still in session. If you are enrolled in a class through SCC, you still need to be doing the work and keeping up. Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Wash your hands. Stay home if you are sick. Wash your hands. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. Let me know if you have any questions. If I don't have the answer right now, I will find out for you and send it out in a future update.
