Our second Senior Shoutout for today goes out to Caden Watts. Caden is the son of Angie Phillips and Steve Watts. After graduation, Caden plans to join the work force. When we asked Cade which staff member has had the greatest impact on him during his high shool tenure he said Mrs. Moulton. This is because "she was the reason I got into reading." Caden's advice to underclassmen is "It's tough, but it'll be over before you know it." Congratulations and best wishes to Caden on his graduation from WHS with the class of 2020 #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020

April 21, 2020 Update: Happy Tuesday, everyone! Just a reminder to all of the students out there. Governor Reynolds has closed school buildings. She has not closed down school. Have you participated in Zoom sessions with your teachers? If not, why not? Learning needs to look different right now, but the opportunities are still there. Your teachers would love to see your bright, shiny faces showing up on the computer screen. Make your teachers happy! Tomorrow night's special board meeting will be held in the auditorium and will be livestreamed. Start time is 7:00. Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Wash your hands. Stay home. Stay home. Stay home. Stay home. Get the message? Wash your hands. If you absolutely must go out, practice social distancing Wash your hands. #wearewapello #wapellotribepride

Today’s first Senior Shoutout goes to Mercedes Becerra. Mercedes is the daughter of Roy and Brandy Becerra. While in high school Mercedes has participated in Student Council for one year, and in volleyball, and band for four years. She has also been involved with FCA for one year. Mercedes’ future plan is to join the Navy, and will leave for bootcamp on July 29th. We asked the Senior to name a teacher/staff member who had an impact on their lives while in school. Mercedes named Mr. & Mrs. Micah and Monique Peck for this because, "They have helped me every step of the way to become a better student and person" When asked her advice for underclassmen, Mercedes said "Don’t take these moments for granted. Like us, it was taken away from us in a split second. Love one another as always and have fun." Congratulations and best wishes to Mercedes as she graduates from WHS with the class of 2020. #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020

CORRECTION: Our second Senior Shoutout goes to Holly Massner. Holly is the daughter of Troy and Joni Massner. While in high school she has participated in many activities; including Student Council and FCCLA for one year, NHS and softball for two years, and has spent four years in volleyball, basketball, track, and band. Holly's future plans include attending Southeastern Community College to study nursing. We asked the Senior to name one teacher/staff member who had an impact on their lives while in school. Holly also named Mr. Todd Parsons as this person because, "He influenced my life in many ways. He has taught me so much about not only sports but also life. He taught me to be disciplined, to be motivated, and to remember the why- even on bad days. He taught me that my bad days are never as bad as I think they are, and to always have a positive attitude. He helped me build confidence in myself. He was always there— to support me, to push me, to give me advice, or just to listen. He is caring and selfless and everything that anyone could ever want in a teacher and/or a coach. Thank you, Parsons." When asked her advice for underclassman, Holly said "Find Joy in the Journey." Congratulations and best wished to Holly as she graduates from WHS with the class of 2020. #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride #classof2020

With the recent news of school closure, we wanted to take the time to honor our Seniors. Today we'll honor two of these Seniors, and our first is Tyler Meek-Cooley. Tyler is the son of Mark and Brook Cooley. While in high school he has participated in several activities; including wrestling and soccer for one year. Football, track and FFA for four years. He was also a member of the local for 4-H club for six years. Tyler's future plans include attending Simpson college to study Athletic Administration and to play football. Reminder that all teacher have "office hours" set up and your child is strongly encouraged to attend these Zoom sessions. We realized this is not always possible, but if you can, we really would love to see the kids. This is PK-12, every week until the end of the "scheduled" school year. Please, email the teachers with questions. Be Safe! #WeAreWapello #WapelloTribePride

In a small town; the lights of the athletic complex act as a signal to the community to show their pride. In these unprecedented times, we illuminate the fields to show our solidarity, our hope, and express the emotions felt in the forfeiture of the spring seasons. And tonight, we lit one field longer to honor a member of the class of 2020 who was taken entirely too soon. As you look through tonight's photos and drone footage, think of the athletes who won't get to compete this spring. Especially those of the class of 2020. https://youtu.be/F6QVjWvzt2Y (photo and drone credit to Eric Small) #wearewapello #SJB ##wapellotribepride

Tonight’s #lightupIA will happen in just a few moments. The lights will remain on for 20 minutes on the baseball, football, and softball fields. We ask if you come to the parking lot that you stay in your vehicles. The lights of the softball field will remain on for an added three minutes to pay tribute to a member of the class of 2020 who died suddenly in this date in 2017. #lightupIA #wearewapello #wapellotibepride

April 17, 2020 Update: Well...we all knew it was coming, but it is still a bit of a shock. Governor Reynolds announced that schools will not reopen this school year. At this point, everyone, and I do mean everyone, has more questions than answers. But, here are some things that we do know: 1. We will work on a plan that will allow people to come and get their belongings out of the school buildings. 2. All spring sports and activities have been canceled. We will receive guidance on summer activities by June 1, as per the governor's statements today. 3. Prom, Graduation, Awards Night, and all of the other end of year events all are on hold. Obviously, they won't happen in May. However, these are important events in the lives of students. Therefore, I think we have a duty to try to salvage things as best we can. Plans will be in the works and more information will be provided when it is finalized. 4. Our commitment to maintaining connections with our students remains unchanged. Distance learning is not ideal. It is full of shortcomings, and everyone is trying to figure it out. Some things will work. Some things will not. Thank you for your support as we continue to work to do what is best for our students. 5. Finally, to the class of 2020. This is not the spring you were expecting, nor is it the spring we were hoping you would have. Please know that we are going to work very hard to provide you with as many of the experiences of your final months of high school as possible. They just may happen at an odd time of year. And please, please, please follow the guidelines: Wash your hands Cover your cough Wash your hands Stay at home. I don't know how to make it any plainer. STAY AT HOME. Wash your hands. If you absolutely must go somewhere, practice social distancing. Wash your hands #wearewapello #wapellotribepride

Oh, the important of such a tiny word... The governor did NOT make any school announcements today.

April 16, 2020 Update: *****Governor Reynolds surprised us all today when she did make any announcements regarding school closings. She has assured everyone that schools would have at least two weeks notice before any new announcements take effect. That means tomorrow is the deadline. Stay tuned... *****To add just a little bit of humor to life, I've included one of my favorite "Dad jokes." My children love it when I share these, so here you go. Here are the 3 unwritten rules of life... 1. 2. 3. Okay, at least I found it funny... *****Students, remember to attend the various Zoom sessions your teachers have set up for you. Yes, they are optional, but it's important to maintain contact with your school life, even if you can't do it in person. *****We won't even talk about the snow coming into the area tonight. *****And lest you forget: Wash your hands. Cover your cough. Wash your hands. Stay at home. Yes, this means you. Even if you aren't sick. Stay at home. Wash your hands. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. #wearewapello #wapellotribepride
